How to Use the Spending Category Planner

Managing your money is easier when you can visualize where it’s going. Follow these four simple steps to build your custom monthly budget plan:

1. Enter Your Monthly Income

Start by entering your total monthly after-tax income (your “take-home pay”) in the first field. This provides the baseline for your percentages.

2. Set Your Category Budgets

Scroll through the category grid and enter the dollar amount you plan to spend (or currently spend) in each area:

  • Fixed Costs: Housing, Utilities, Insurance, and Debt Payments.

  • Variable Costs: Groceries, Transportation, and Personal Care.

  • Lifestyle & Future: Dining Out, Entertainment, and Savings.

3. Build Your Plan

Click the “Build My Plan” button. The tool will instantly generate a visual breakdown, showing you the exact percentage of your income each category consumes.

4. Review the “Budget Gap”

Look at the bottom of your results to see your status:

  • Purple Box (Unallocated): You have money left over! Consider moving this to Savings or Debt Payments.

  • Red Box (Over Budget): You are spending more than you earn. Review your categories and “trim” until you reach zero.

  • Green Box (Zero-Based): Perfect! Every dollar has a job.

Why Categorize Your Spending?

Using a category planner helps you identify “budget leaks.” For example, if you notice Dining Out is taking up 20% of your income while Savings is only 2%, you can use this data to make intentional adjustments to your lifestyle and reach your financial goals faster.
